Find a printer
First, you should find a printer.
Windows 7/8
- Windows can print directly to CUPS print servers, but your user name under
Windows must be the same as your EECIS username. If you attempt to print as
a user with a different name, your print job will appear to execute, but
will be silently discarded by the print server.
- You can check if your printer job successfully printed in your browser
under this URL: http://print1.eecis.udel.edu:631/printers/ Search for the
printer and click on Show all jobs. To change your username under which
you print, Press the Windows Key + R (Execute dialog) and enter
compmgmt.msc. Under Local user and groups – Users select your
username and press F2 to rename your username. Note this will only work
under the professional or enterprise version of Windows-7 and not under the
home version. This will not change your folder names under Windows!
- If you had to change your username please restart before proceeding.
- Note that you will need Administrator access to set up printers under
Windows, but do not need to be an Administrator to print. To add
printers:
- Click on the Start button and enter Add printer in the Search
programs and files. Click on the Add printer link to open the dialog
to add a printer.
- In windows 8: Find the control panel (windows key + r to open run, type
‘control panel’ and hit enter) then click on hardware and sound. Click
on advanced printer setup. Skip step 6.
- Choose Add a network printer
- Abort the search which Windows automatically does by clicking on The
printer that I want isn’t listed
- Choose Select a shared printer by name and enter
http://print1.eecis.udel.edu:631/printers/cis-color
as the printer name
substituting cis-color for your actual printer name.
- As the printer driver choose Generic on the left side and then MS
Publisher Color printer and hit OK. Even if it’s a black and white
printer.
- Go through the rest of the dialog and click finish.
- You can now already print but will probably not be able to use duplex. If
it works for you, you can stop here otherwise keep going:
- To enable duplex printing we need to choose a different printer driver
(which we first have to manually update):
- Press the Windows key + R and enter printmanagement.msc to start the
print management console.
- Go to Print Servers - Your computer - Printers where Your
computer is your actual computer name.
- Right click on your the printer you just added (starting with http) and
choose Properties
- Select the Advanced tab and push the New driver button.
- In the dialog which pops up click next and then choose Windows Update.
(Note it was not possible to choose this in the previous dialog, at least
with the current version of Win 7)
- Wait until the update has finished. This takes a while.
- Now choose the new printer driver Generic - 35PPM PS which is a
generic postscript driver.
- Go through the rest of the dialog and click finish.
- IMPORTANT: Hit the Apply button in the dialog to load the new printer
driver!
- Now choose the right most tab Device Options and change the Duplex
Module setting to available.
- You should now be able to print 2 sided. Don’t forget to choose this option
under the Preferences dialog whenever you print (Or alternatively set
it as default in the left most tab).
Windows XP/Vista
Windows can print directly to CUPS print servers, but your user name under

user with a different name, your print job will appear to execute, but will be
silently discarded by the print server.

this URL: http://print1.eecis.udel.edu:631/printers/ Search for the printer
and click on Show all jobs. To change your username under which you print

is no need to wait for the «Searching» to finish.

shared printer by name» under Windows Vista.
- Enter
http://print1.eecis.udel.edu:631/printers/cis-color

printers).

otherwise select No. (Under Windows Vista check or uncheck the «Set
a the default printer» box.) Click Next.
- Click Finish.
